Styling Built-Ins

We’re not quite sure if it is the annual spring cleaning, or this quarantine that has motivated us to freshen up our homes and the Boutique. Whichever the influencing factor is, we are in full organizing and re-decorating mode. The simplest way to have things feel in order is to move a few pieces around in your home, and built-in shelving is always the perfect prospect. We love designing built-ins for our clients, it allows us to tell a story for them and truly showcase their style. In the event that you find yourself wanting to revamp your own shelving, we’ve put together ten tips on how to style a built-in!

1. Remove everything off the shelves to have a clean canvas.

2. Decide on a color palette and start to pick out your favorite items that you want to showcase.

3. Start placing your favorite items in the order you like - keep it simple and functional!

4. Mix up the shapes and sizes - high and low, organic and geometric.

5. Add in a few of your favorite books that fit the overall theme and lay some flat and some standing up.

6. Don't be afraid to tastefully pair in art and family photos.

7. Liven it up with plants (florals, succulents, etc.) - these are great for seasonal decor.

8. Blend the old with the new - vases, decorative objects, and bookends are a great addition.

9. Layer! Keeping things uncluttered and clean, feel free to layer by creating small clusters of 2-3 objects.

10. Finish off with your personal touch!
