With a sunny view of the Pacific Coast Highway and fresh aroma of the salty sea, this is the ultimate sanctuary for an at-home work space. When creating a built-in desk with upper shelving in this coastal home just off the water, we went with vertical shiplap painted in a clean, creamy white and matte black hardware. Keeping the work area uncluttered and pretty is one sure way of staying focused. We love to mix in warm tones for a pop of color against the soft whites, greens, and blues.

Our favorite Designer Tips for styling built-ins are:

  • Stacking books, which act as decorative pieces while adding height to objects.

  • Incorporating your favorite vibrant art piece or two against clean, white walls helps to bring in color and add dimension.

  • Playing with scale; alternating large and small pieces together create harmony and visual interest.

  • Fresh florals not only add a pleasant aroma, but liven up the area.
